One of the most striking international trends of the past seven years has been the dramatic growth of antisemitism, particularly in Europe and the Islamic world. This scourge has reached its highest level since World War II. B'nai B'rith International (BBI) is dedicated to shining the spotlight on hatred of Jews as a distinct and unique social illness, and to marshalling efforts to combat and, wherever possible, eradicate this phenomenon.
B'nai B'rith International supported a bill, signed into law by President Bush in 2004, which created a State Department office to monitor antisemitism around the world. The Global Anti-Semitism Review Act also required the State Department to issue a country-by-country report on antisemitic acts.
BBI also has worked extensively with officials in the State Department, in Congress, and in foreign governments to support the efforts of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to combat antisemitism. To promote tolerance and inter-group understanding, since 2003, BBI has participated in high-level conferences on antisemitism in Vienna, Berlin, Cordoba, and Bucharest, as well as in numerous consultations and meetings with experts.
BBI successfully pressed for the inclusion, in an OSCE Parliamentary Assembly resolution, of an amendment endorsing the Romanian government's offer to host a June 2007 conference to focus on antisemitism and other forms of intolerance. BBI also supports the mandate of three personal representatives of the OSCE's chair-in-office to monitor antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of intolerance.
